REIKI (pronounced Ray-Key) is a Japanese term loosely translated into English as "spiritually guided universal life force energy". The energy that we call Reiki, this 'Universal Life Force,' connects us to the 'Source' of all life. It is the 'Light within the Atom,' the 'Primordial Vibration. Everything in creation is made up of electromagnetic energy, vibrating at different frequencies that correspond to sound, light and color. The existence of electromagnetic fields around every object in the world, known as an Aura. The Chinese refer to this energy as 'Chi' (pronounced Chee), this vital life force energy of the Universe, is present within every living thing. Throughout history this energy has been given many names such as ...OM, AUM, Prana, Chi, Ki, Orgone and to the Native American's "Great Spirit".
This life force energy which flows through our very essence is our "Breath of life". Since we are all multi- dimensional beings. Reiki works on all levels of our body's subtle System. Which include our (Aura, Chakras and Meridians). Clearing and balancing every aspect of our being, thereby giving us the ability to maintain health and wellness. Reiki provides deep and powerful healing on all levels of our being "spiritually, mentally, emotionally, psychologically and physically". Reiki has been described simply as a "Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing." However it is so much more than that.
Reiki has been practiced for over 4,000 years and is one of our most sacred gifts from our Ancestors. Many Spiritual healers and saints including- Jesus himself -used this energy to heal many with his "laying on hands of healing." Lucky for us it was rediscovered in 1920's by a Buddhist Monk Named Dr. Mikao Usui. The system, he developed is known as the Usui System of Natural Healing or Usui Shiki Ryoho.
Dr. Mikao Usui Sensi developed his own spiritual meditative practice or method to achieve personal perfection. The intent of the practice was to attain (Anshin Ritsumei) a state in which one's mind is totally at peace, experiencing a state of enlightenment. Which allows one to perceive one's life purpose. Mikao Usui stated that "the purpose of the Reiki system was to bring Peace, Happiness and Health to oneself and then, with the mind of God or the Buddha mind, one could share it with others.
Dr. Mikao Usui System was brought to the West in 1938 by Mrs. Hawayo Takata. Having been trained by Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a Japanese Naval Surgeon and student of Dr. Mikao Ushi. She practiced Reiki in North America for over forty years. Prior to her death in 1980, she initiated a total of 22 masters in Canada and the United States . Which in turn carried on the teaching of Dr. Mikao Usui through out the world. The great majority of western practitioners including myself trace their lineage back to Usui through her. Since her death many independent schools and variations of Reiki have been formed to date.
